Emiel is a multidisciplinary artist based in Utrecht, whose practice evolved from drawing and painting into a wide-ranging exploration of visual and experiential art. He started getting involved in the rave culture in Utrecht around 2010, discovering the art of stage design and the technology behind it.
This would mark the beginning of several years of studying sound systems, lights, electronics, and event organisation. After encountering projection work at a party, Emiel sensed that the medium held far more unexplored potential. This led him to a new path into creating visuals, developing software, experimenting with projection mapping, and visual storytelling.
Expanding his skillset as time went on, he eventually turned to designing and building his own electronics, enabling him to integrate lights and interactivity into his artworks and performances. What started as a simple seed of thinking, "I could improve this", grew into a broad skillset expressing itself in a diverse collection of works.
From VJing at raves, to escape rooms, museum installations, theatre performances, film production, and more, Emiel always seeks to create a sense of wonder and awe. What brings us to that place of childlike wonder, where the "I" dissolves and brings us into the present? In what ways can we explore our sensorium? How can we tell stories and immerse ourselves into them more? His works are as much about exploring technology as they are a sensory medium.
